Seal and whale watches, many of these are on the bigger whale watching or seal excursion boats carrying up to thirty or more passengers, miles from shore on trips taking hours. However, often the whales oblige and they may be found closer and more available to a small group or family on boats in the 18' to 25' size for excursions of only an hour or so.
Family outings may involve hours of enjoyable fishing or combinations of fishing, seal watching, hands-on exploration of bays and estuaries, birding, touring or taxi service to remote beaches and locations. Many "outings" can be customized to suit the ages and interests of all family members. Often the most interesting outings for younger children allow for more time out of the boat to explore and discover the seashore and aquatic life of the shallows. Families with older children are frequently interested in combinations of seal watching, fishing and taxi service to remoter areas for independent exploration and relaxation.
Birding is offered by a number of nationally recognised organizations on the Cape for medium to large group outings. Smaller group and family outings can be arranged through independent charters and local guides. Nature tours are also offered by local independent charter operators; which may better be able to adapt tours to the interests of individuals.
Water tours offer the viewer the opportunity to become more than casually aware of the intricacies, interesting sights and resources of an area. These tours generally require the participants to remain in the boat while circumnavigating an embayment, inlet or island. Stops for photo opportunities and explanations of the sights and dynamics of an area are anticipated and designed to create an interesting and informative excursion.
Each season thousands of geese and ducks migrate across and around Cape Cod on their way south or to overwinter in our waters. Waterfowlers can expect services ranging from permanent blinds, large block spreads and well trained retrievers to single guided pass shooting or jump shooting operations. Services are seasonal and operations often adaptable to varying group size and interests.
Instruction and courses are available for outdoors people in all areas of interest. There are guides and "schools" that teach fly casting. Others offer Boating safety classes and license instruction. There are hands on instructors in the use of marine electronics: LORAN, GPS, VHF, Radar that teach classes and can be contracted to teach one-on-one on your boat. There are diving schools, flying schools, windsurfing classes and birding seminars. There are guides that take you to the fishing and guides that teach fishing.
