Fishing Guide Information (rates and hours at the bottom of the page)
Cape Cod Outdoors, Capt. Michael Eichenseer,
flyfishing and light spinning trips
for Stripers and more, this year we'll be catching in Pleasant Bay in the
spring and out to the Atlantic, Monomoy Island and Nantucket Sound during
the summer and fall. Catching everything from schoolies to keepers and
line class records.
[As I edit this, February 20. 2005 the schoolies are expected into
Pleasant Bay and up through the Canal to Cape Cod Bay in early May]. .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Last year, '04, it began in mid-April and for
weeks the hungry stripers were everywhere in Pleasant Bay.
[From my journal,
"...just this last week a big group of keeper stripers and a few blues
have entered the Bay. Big catches and many keepers are being caught."]
And so last year
went (I'm writing this in Feb. of 2004) with mixed catches inside
Pleasant Bay of bass from 12 ' to 38" and spectacular fishing off
Monomoy and North Beach for bass, blues and tunas. Lots of stripers
into the forties and blues to 16 pounds. Fewer bonito than in '03 but a
whole lot more false albacore!
Even the bluefin
were close to shore. The year ended in late October
when the last of the schools of schoolie stripers migrated down the coast
and either through the canal or around Chatham. But inside the bays and harbors, keeper sized stripers were caught
as late as Thanksgiving! Last year was better than the three preceeding it. This year, 2005, ought to be very good too.
Or for those interested in boating toexplore the natural world around us, there are seals (early inside Pleasant Bay & all
summer on south Beach) and other wildlife (foxes, raccoons, deer, coyote)
on the beaches and around the marshes and islands to be observed.
Birding
is very popular around Pleasant Bay and Monomoy Island. Small naturalist
led groups observe and photograph birds from Plovers to Ospreys, Great
Blues and Great Whites and more.
(The Ospreys always arrive about 4/10, or one day ahead of the herring!).
There is alsosomething
for the quiet folk just looking for a place
to get away from the crowds. Peaceful and isolated stretches of the outer
beach and dune that are best (and in some cases only) accessed by boat.
Waterfowlingin the fall is very popular
and success is virtually assured. A trip for Sea Ducks or Puddlers can
offer the hunter a chance of a lifetime to see waterfowl in the very midst
of the Atlantic flyway. The early season for Canada Geese is very comfortable
in September and easily successful around Chatham. Kayaking trips are both
productive and interesting.
It looks like a great year for Bluefish
and Stripers. There are Striped Bass of all sizes and its hard to believe
they were once in danger.
Those Blues are of mixed sizes. There should also be a lot of fun and
feisty small Bluefish around this year. Stripers from 16" to 30"
are common (and even overwintering!) and more anglers are being surprised
by the hit of keepers (28") inside Pleasant Bay each summer.
A couple of years ago on July 5 about 1000 keeper size fish came into the
Bay in one night! Fishing was unbelieveable for about a week! Keepers
were possible on consecutive fly casts that day. Bait and plug
fishing was just too easy.
These events occur without warning and you have to be on the water all the
time or know someone
who is to take advantage of these
bonanzas. The Pleasant Bay area is certainly one of the very best, if not
the best fishing place along with Monomoy, on the Cape. If you know
where and when and how to go, you can catch a lot of fish and keepers too.
That's where my experience on the water,
day after day, makes all the difference.
I'll be chartering trips for fishermen using a variety of methods. You can
choose from flyfishing, light spinning, or bait fishing. Combinations of
tackle types and 'on the water' adaptations are always possible.
There are lots of fish and excellent catches are common in the Chatham area.

NATURE
TRIPS. SEALS AND OTHER WILDLIFE....Sea Sounds
There are the seals (hundreds
last year, mooing and grunting) on Tern Island and the end of South Beach
to visit and watch while they nap on the sand or come out to investigate
the boat. Lots of Great Blue Herons, Egrets, Terns and other shore birds
too. Red Foxes and sometimes Coyotes, Raccoons, Opossums and Deer are visible
on the Islands and the Outer Beaches. Hawks, Ospreys and the occasional
Eagle take up summer residency in the Pleasant Bay system and Monomoy Island
Sanctuary. A few hours on the water exploring the islands, marshes and shoreline
can reveal much of natural beauty and wildlife of the Cape. I'll guide you
to places I've discovered after thousands of hours on the water and the
shore.

BIRDING
Years ago, I Captained the birding
trips around Pleasant Bay in Orleans and Chatham and out to Monomoy for
the Audubon folks up in Wellfleet. These may not be offered this year as
frequently as last. Contact Audubon if you are interested or drop me a line
and I may be able to accommodate your needs directly.
Birders can expect to see shore birds,
birds of the saltmarsh and pine barrens, waterfowl and the larger raptors
like Osprey and possibly Bald Eagle.

WATERFOWL
Come the fall and the returning
of the ducks and geese, Cape Cod Outdoors
will be scheduling waterfowling trips and booking with other outfitters
in Cape Cod area.
Thousands of Sea Ducks fly by and settle into this area for the winter.
They trade from Ocean to Bay, across spits and saltmarshes all day long.
Pass shooting opportunities abound and these big ducks decoy very well to
strategically placed spreads of decoys. Bag limits are liberal, four to
seven Sea Ducks per hunter are usual (plus other species: geese, puddlers,
mergansers).
Puddlers, most particularly Mallards and Blacks, are doing well on the Atlantic
Flyway and every season sees more outstanding hunting . If Kayaking is your thing, we can lead you to phenomenal inshore Canada Goose hunting in
the early fall on Pleasant Bay and around Monomoy Island. Jump shooting
Puddlers in the creeks and marshes is an exciting morning by any standards.

interests and what's available. Just don't wait too long, things do get
crowded around here in the summer and I'm talking with people and booking
days now.
I charter for five hours from Ryder's Cove in North Chatham, fly
fishing or light spinning on my 19' boat. I provide all tackle
necessary and all terminal tackle as well. There is plenty of
casting room for two and safe walking around space. The rate for
one or two adults is $400 for the five hours. I can accomodate
families inside the Bay with small children if desired. I book
first come first served, require a deposit and don't like to go out in
poor weather or for poor fishing. Deposits are returned if I
cancel for the above reasons. Drop me anEmailand I'll be happy to discuss more of this with you.
