Cape Cod provides access for the disabled to the water in many locations. Not all of these points are easily utilized: requiring advanced reservation of a surf chair, non-accessible restrooms, roll-out mats to the beach and finally fees or stickers. It strikes me, as I write this that an effort is being made but that we have a long way to go. Nonetheless, both town and federal buildings, centers and parks are reasonably accessible. Beaches seem to be the weak point, so I'll go into some length here to try to help the reader make plans.
Only the State beaches: South Cape Beach (residents only) and Scusset Beach have "free" parking with a "disabled" plate or sign. All the rest have fees and/or town stickers. Call the town ahead for more detailed information on reservations and changes. Here's a partial listing:
Life Guards=LG, Rest Rooms=RR, Not Accessible=N/A, Surf Chair=SC, Residents Only=RO.
These are only the listings for saltwater beaches. Most towns reserve a "way to water" to maintain access to freshwater ponds for the boating public and some public beaches as well. Check with the town or get a local atlas to find these places.
I'm contacting a few sources and putting some thought into the best places to access fishing or birding or hunting, etc. from a chair.
Another opportunity is to enlist the services of a guide to aid in accessing remoter areas
of interest. Consider the possibilities!
