Week of June 19

The fishing has really picked up this past week. The Vineyard sounds almost too good to be true if I didn't know it gets this good every year. There are a lot of schoolie bass and bluefish mixed in along the shore all around the Cape with the hotspots being the offshore shoals in both Bay and Sound. Fluke is the bonus fish right now from Buzzards Bay to P'town. And it must be summer because Chatham has fog 'til 10:00. Check out this week's report from the local experts.

Martha's Vineyard   Capt. Mike Doke, Eastwind Sportfishing Charters out of Osterville, says Wasque has been very good lately. The middle ground on the Vineyard has also be good with a lot of small bass. Otherwise the fishing is generally excellent across the island.
Cape Cod Bay Chris Morissette reports that the fishing is about the same on the north edge shoals around Billingsgate as it has been for two weeks. Best technique is wire line down around 50' to 60' and using umbrella rigs with the tube worms and a spoon. He adds that there are bluefish near the path off Wellfleet and he hears that good bass are being taken off Long Point in Provincetown on jigs.
Chatham and Monomoy  Michael Eichenseer charters for Cape Cod Outdoors on Pleasant Bay. The schoolie fishing has been better this past week with a lot of 22" to 26" fish feeding on flood tide sandeels. There still aren't a lot of keepers being taken even though the tube and worm guys are tryin'. Maybe one in 20 fish is a keeper on the flyrod. A black eel is the high producer right now. The fishing continues very good off of the Monomoy flats for keeper sized stripers and schoolies. Thankfully, not many bluefish are tearing up the flyroders right now.
Nauset Inlet  Peter at The Bait shack in Orleans says that "the big ones are in" at Nauset Inlet. Folks are catchin' 'em on chunk bait, eels and sand eels. Best time is the flood near the top for a couple of hours. Schoolies remain in good supply but no word of fluke yet.
Provincetown  Emilio, up in Nelson's Bait and Tackle in Provincetown says there are still a lot of schoolies around but only a few keepers. The good news is that the fluke fishing is still very good and there are some 30" to 32" bluefish hanging around and hitting topwaters. Harpoon season is open on tuna and a few have been brought into the P'town docks.
Wellfleet Seth at The Black Duck Sport Shop in Wellfleet reports sporadic but big bluefish in the 32" range on the ocean side. The few stripers that are being taken now are hitting to chunk bait (squid and herring) on the inside, with sea worms being a very popular bait among the fishers for everything. On the Bay side there has been too much mung because of the wind and the fishing is off unless you can get out in a boat and use wire line, then its a gimme.
Rock Harbor & Cape Cod Bay  Jim Mardulier, charters from Truro & Orleans, he emailed me. "It doesn't really matter if you have anything better than 20-50 vision; the entire Bay is wall to wall bass and blues. Everyone is boating stripers in the
40+ range on rigs and hoochies. You can catch them offshore in 70' water or in
15' . It is a testimonial to the legislation regulating the striper take; nice
work to NMFS." Thanks, Jim.
Barnstable Harbor  Steve Shiraka fishes and guides out of Barnstable Harbor. He reports that the north shore has a lot of small fish. He, and others, did spot some roving schools of Hickory Shad this past week. Good sized fish too. There are also fluke showing up in the harbor now in catchable numbers. The heavy rain runoff has colored the water from the creeks and the fishing is off there. Sandy Neck continues to produce the biggest fish but it is only accessible by boat.
Cape Cod Canal  Sheila Miller from the Bait Shack in Sandwich emailed a report. She says, "yesterday
we had several good size fish weighed in. One 24 and 1/4th pounder out of the Canal -witnessed at 5:30 pm Wed 6/17. A 15 pounder at 6:30 out of Canal. Yesterday afternoon between 12 and 2:30 there were a couple of fellows fishing on the Cape Side with lures and catching schoolies. and directly across from them - near the Herring Run some guy was chumming and caught a 35" striper. The only fatty this past weekend was one brave soul
who caught a 26 pounder on this boat early Saturday am. Everyone else was sleeping in the pouring rain. That's all folks."
Thanks, Sheila.
Martha's Vineyard  Cooper Gilkes from Coop's Tackle on Martha's Vineyard, and a guide, tells me that up island there is good fishing for stripers at Squibnocket and Devil's Bridge. They are catchin' on herring, eels and Ballistic Missiles. Out at Wasque, he says the topwater fishing is excellent, he advises to target the striped bass on a rising tide at night and the bluefish during the day. All the bridges are good producers with lures but fantastic with bait: small herring and sand eels. In addition, the fluke fishing has picked up enough to be getting good.
 Nantucket Sound

Andy Little in the Powderhorn Outfitters in Hyannis says the south side of the Cape along the sound continues to be active from Pompanessitt to Oregon beach to Cotuit and Osterville. Lately some big stripers to 36" have been taken on cut bait and eels. the fly fishers continue to score as well. He weighed a 28# from Barnstable Harbor the other day taken on a fly. Bottom fishing is still off but the fluke are continuing to bite well near shore. Bluefish are still holding on Horseshoe Shoals and jumpin' on hootchies and parachutes.

In freshwater, the smallmouths are biting well and Andy has seen some righteous over-ten-pound largemouths lately. Trout are taking midges near the surface (as well as shiners deep)

South Shore Neal Larsson adds a report that there are a lot of small bluefish off Pompanessit and some decent striped bass schoolies too.He too heard that the Wasque rips were producing well and using a pencil popper worked well.

That's about it for this week. Best bets appear to be Cape Cod Bay for keepers and blues from a boat and any shore for beach action. The sand eels look to be coming in in all sizes now and the first small herring are going to sea on the islands. Remember, the fluke are in and the Sound and P'town may be the best places.
