Cape Cod Fishing Report, July 31, 1998

We've had a lot of wind since last weekend and its kept most folk off the water until friday. Before the wind came on tuesday the fishing was pretty good and consistent in those places reported upon last week. Now the tides have changed and we'll have to look out for new patterns that may have emerged. Sand eels, black eels and chunking are the baits. Lures that imitate these or that work the bottom have been the best producers all across the Cape.

Chatham & Monomoy  Capt. Michael Eichenseer. I've been guiding in the Pleasant Bay and Monomoy area. This past week has been very good or very hard. The Bay has shown some schoolie action early in the morning when the sand eels have come in and a few keepers are being taken regularly off Lighthouse and South beach at night. But the action is thin as is the bait. Better fishing can be found outside the break. The end of Monomoy has been a consistent producer in the rips with sand eels beating out jigging so far. The fish are not on the surface in the Sound and fly fishing has been tough on the flats, though lots of fish are there. Successful flycasters are using smaller flies and more cautious approaches. North of the break toward Orleans there have been big pods of stripers to 40" and bluefish to 16 pounds gorging on sand eels. Further offshore about four miles east is a solid band of tinker mackerel chasing sand eels and the occasional school of big blues chasing them.
Provincetown   Joe Pagano at Nelson's Bait & Tackle in Provincetown reports a good run of striped bass at Race Point. Successful fishers are using jigs and bait and just about anything since the fish are right in the wash. On South beach there have been big bluefish from Race to the back. For once, this big wind of late has been helping by blowing the bait onshore and the fish have been following. Joe says the fluking continues to be good too, sand eels, strip bait and small jigs have worked well on these.
Cape Cod Canal   Bruce at Canal Bait & Tackle told me yesterday that there have been stripers breaking in the canal in the morning for some time now. There are also fish from Pip's Rip to the East End. Chunking with pogies or mackerel during the day and black eels at night have been the best producers. there are also some small bluefish around, four to six pounders occasionally slashing up the strirper action. Flounder fishing from shore and boat continues good too. Perhaps the only place on Cape for this right now.
Freshwater Fishing  Freshwater has been best at night for the largemouths, using jitterbugs and such or fishing deep with bait during the day due to the heat and bright light.
Nantucket Sound & Barnstable Harbor   Andy at the Powderhorn in Hyannis called in to say that inshore the fishing is only okay for mostly schoolies and small bluefish. Bigger blues up to eleven pounds have been taken recently off Horseshoe Shoals. A few squeateague continue to be caught in the sound and the fluke fishing appears to be best right now off Bishop's and Clerks rocks. He also adds that fluke are still being caught around Barnstable Harbor. Futher offshore, Andy continues to hear of white marlin south of the Vineyard and brown sharks at night caught off Pompanessitt.
Harwichport   Larry Nickerson, owner of Kildee Hill Bait & Tackle in Harwichport says the shore fishing is still poor, this wind hasn't helped at all.He has heard of some good fluke fishing inside the Kill Pond Buoy in the Sound though. Folks interested in the crabbing should try for the bigger blues in swan river about now. Larry also has heard of the continued good fishing off Monomoy and now the occasional keepers taken off Lighthouse beach in Chatham at night with eels. Nauset Inlet & Orleans

 Nauset Inlet &

Brewster Flats

John at The Bait Shack in Orleans reports the fishing improving at Nauset Inlet, particularly at the beginning of the flood. Seems more than a few folk have witnessed the fish coming over the bars at this time. sand eels and black eels are the best producers. There have also been some nice stripers taken right off the swimming beach at Nauset lately too and the gorilla hole has begun to produce regularly. John notes that Brewster flats are still holding a lot of schoolies up to 27". Fishing there is usually with sand eels tossed out into the current at morning low tide and the night flood.
Falmouth   Alex at Eastman's in Falmouth tells of this big wind holding the boaters ashore recently. But the fishing for bonito has improved, particularly on the "hooter" near Martha's Vineyard (a bottom contour). Striped bass are still being taken up to 30 pounds or so by boaters using jigs and bait. there are small bluefish around in the 3 to 5 pound size, cruising in pods. Shark and tuna fishing continues south of the Vineyard with mixed success.
Nantucket   Jerry at Barry Thurston's Fish Supply on Nantucket reports that there is good bluefishing on the south shore. Try surfcasting near Tom Nevers field in the evening for best results or Great Point at sunrise. The bonito fishing has improved, best on the west end and Mateket near the opening. Striper fishing has slowed somewhat in the heat but should be picking up again in a few weeks. Boaters should try near the East end and Sankaty Lighthouse using wire deep.
Martha's Vineyard   Coop at Coop's Bait & Tackle on the Vineyard reports the bonito all but disappearred this last week but reshowed this morning. Bluefish have been big at Wasque but the striper fishing is definitely slowing with higher water temps and the sand eels being so small everywhere. Brown sharks continue to be caught off the East beach along with some stripers too. Fluke fishing is very good though and they are big. Tuna is picking up with yellowfin 3 miles south of the "hooter" and a few bluefin too.
Chatham Steve Shiraka tells about fishing Monomoy flats lately. He has been doing very well sight fishing good sized stripers there using clousers and crab flies. Flyfishers should be careful of their visibility and delivery though as these fish are being hunted hard and are touchy about movement and sound. Try the west side bars on the ebb early in the morning for best results.

The best fishing this week appears to be for flounder off the east end of the canal, bonito around the islands or bluefish outside the break in Chatham. Everything is eating sand eels during the day and then black eels or chunks at night. Best nighttime fishing right now may be for largemouths where no one is on the freshwater. Best daytime fishing may be along Nauset and North beaches.
