Its been a very windy week along most of the Cape, breaking loose a lot of grass and mung to foul hooks and flies. Now that the wind is likely to die down a bit, the fishing is bound to improve. The hotspot from shore appears to be P'town for the bass with eels. Good fluking still in Orleans and the sharks and bonito are coming in! Take a look at the reports for more information.
| Cape Cod Bay | Captain Jim Mardulier charters from Truro and Orleans and he writes, "Lots of stripers in the keeper-size range from Wellfleet, in deep water, to Provincetown's Race Point. Action occurs all day long, sporadically. Mostly, jigging works. Bluefish, schooled up off Pamet Harbor to the Hopper, on umbrella rigs and hoochies. Fluke fishing slowing down off the Wood End. Still several fish to be had per angler. There are a few bluefin in deep water off the Wood End, too. Most tuna off the backside trolling, though. Regards, Jim." Thanks Jim |
| Orleans | Chris Morissette of Seaduction Charter services in Rock Harbor, says that the fishing continues to be good off Billingsgate Shoals. Jigging for striped bass is best and if bluefish is the target, try the path and on to Pamet River. He thinks the stripers are going to deeper water in this heat as evidenced by the smaller 40-inch fish now in showing. Chris adds that there are bluefish on Sunken Meadow too, for those with a topwater urge. |
| Nantucket | Dave Beaumont on Nantucket tells me the fishing is good there too. A lot of boats offshore are catching well and picking up some white marlin too, along with brown sharks and a few mako. The bonito are still along the west end but not in fully yet and everyone is hoping for the false albacore to join them again this summer. There are bluefish along the shore, Metacomet to Surfside, being caught on chunks and eels in the dark. The bluefish are also found from Great Point to Sankaty area. |
| Provincetown | Emilio, owner of Nelson's Bait & Tackle in Provincetown, says the fishing reports are conflicting. He thinks the best fishermen are keeping the secret of good fishing. Boat fishing is best, using eels. The beach is best fished at night. The bluefish are chopin' up the eels so there must be a lot of them around. Fluke fishing continues to be good off the shore using strips, eels and bucktails. |
| Barnstable | Andy at The Powderhorn Outfitters, reports the same action as before along Cotuit and Poponessett. There are bluefish on top and stripers around after dark for bait fishing. More sea trout are being caught on bucktails and squid in the sound lately and the action is getting better. He notes that big mako, yellow fin, bluefin and white marlin are being taken off the southern shore of the Vineyard, the dump actually. Horseshoe shoals will probably hold bluefish all summer. There are nice big stripers in Barnstable Harbor but they are deep and taking eels reluctantly. Stomachs show a high percentage of big crabs being taken for forage. Try around the No. 2 can off the harbor. |
| Falmouth | Alex at Eastman's in Falmouth has seen some nice 39- and 42-pound stripers in the last two days. These were taken on tubes and chunks from boats along the shore. Folks are still hunting brown sharks along the shore at night but there are mostly schoolies there now. He has heard of Bonito at the Hedge Fence and lots of bluefish in the 6-pound size being taken by trolling. The freshwater fishing has slowed considerably due to warming waters. (Good time to go at night). |
| Barnstable | Steve Sharika reports that Monomoy has been good for stripers in the 34- to 36-inch size and so too has Barnstable Harbor channel given up good striped bass lately (confirming Andy's report). But inside the harbor has slowed down due to the higher temperature and less forage. Best approach is to fish late at night with eels and chunks. |
| Nauset Inlet | Tom at The Bait Shack in Orleans, reports the mung is gone off the inlet and folks are catching well and consistently off the Coast Guard Beach. Brewster flats has given up the most fish using light tackle on the flood tide and by trolling the thermocline. He hears good reports about the fishing off the No. 1 can at Billingsgate. He also tells of a possible new, all-tackle record striper caught off Connecticut this past week. Possibly well over the 81 pound mark. We'll have to wait on the official word! |
| Harwichport | Larry Nickerson at Kildee Hill Bait and Tackle tells of very quiet shore fishing still, the water being so warm. No bonito yet. But Monomoy is good and with the few squid still around, the lure of choice seems to be white parachutes and reverse adam's. He also hears of bluefish on the beach near the east tip of Monomoy, while the stripers are in the rips pretty good. |
| Chatham | I charter in Pleasant Bay and along Monomoy. The inside still holds keeper stripers. I had a 9-year-old land a 29-incher on light line the other day at 5:00 in the afternoon on a sluggo! But they are finicky and not biting well on flies or lures. The good fishing is outside along the south beach and at the end of Monomoy. Good catches of stripers up to 40 inches can be taken on sand eels, and the occasional big sharks that you can't budge, are all lying in the rips. |
