Fishing Report for the week of August 21, 1998

The water is still too warm in many places to attract the fish into shore, but the canal and the other end of the Cape, Provincetown, appear to have the best fishing. Bring the little spoons for the bonito along the south coast and get a ride on a boat for the best fishing right now. Good luck!

Provincetown Emilio, at Nelson's Bait & Tackle in Provincetown, reported very active fishing at the Race for stripers and plenty of bluefish too. These fish are spread out from the front all the way around to the backside of the Race. There are bass up to 40 pounds and bluefish in the 15-plus size. Plug casters are working now, and a few are still throwing eels. Everywhere the fluking is good for fish up to 4 pounds, even off the pier!
Barnstable Harbor Steve Shiraka says the fishing along the Sandwich coast and in Barnstable Harbor is strongly influenced by all the bait, sand eels, in the water. Good tides this weekend for morning wading along the creeks and out to the point and Sandy Neck. Good stripers are being taken with black eels, at night, in the harbor and out to the beach point.
Nantucket Sound & Barnstable Andy, at The Powderhorn in Hyannis, says the bonito and Spanish mackerel are being caught along Popponesset and Craigville Beaches. Try very small 3/4-ounce silver spoons; the fish are finicky. Horseshoe Shoal still has bluefish and most of the coast has small schoolies and blues. Best fishing in the morning and late evening.
Harwich Port  Larry Nickerson, owner of Kildee Hill Bait & Tackle in Harwich Port, says the shore fishing is "nothin'," except for the little snappers in the harbors. Still some fluke out by the Kill Pond Buoy. No good stripers are being caught, even by the boaters. The water is just too warm and the bait too spread out.
Nauset Inlet & Orleans Ed at the Bait Shack in Orleans says the word is "mung." Fishing the Inlet at Nauset Beach is pretty much dependent upon fishing an ebb tide to avoid the mung. Sea worms and sand eels during the day and black eels at night work best. On Cape Cod Bay the best fishing appears to be off the bars at low tide, but fishing is still slow overall and the fish are small. Look for blues off the path where they've been all summer.
Falmouth Alex at Eastman's Tackle in Falmouth reports that the shore fishing is still very slow. Folks throwing eels along the Elizabeths, especially at night, are catching some nice fish to 40 inches but otherwise there are only small schoolies along the shore and small bluefish between the coast and Martha's Vineyard. Fluking is still good though, as it is almost everywhere across the Cape.
Nantucket Dave Beaumont on Nantucket tells me that the fishing was slow but has been improving from shore and boat now that the water is cooling a bit. There are stripers to 40 inches out on South Beach area, Sconsett to Surfside. Bonito are still being caught in the opening between Madaket and Tuckernuck. And the fluke fishing continues to be good and predictable around Great Point and Sankaty.
Chatham & Monomoy  I guide in the Pleasant Bay and Monomoy area. The water off the outer beach has dropped in temperature from 64 degrees to 52 degrees and back up to 62 in the last week. A cold bight of the Atlantic has surely come through and brought with it an improvement in the striper fishing. Schoolies inside can be found off the rock wall and around Strong Island with greater regularity. Outside, both Pollock Rip and Nauset Beach have been holding nice bass up to 44 inches. Bluefish are around but hit or miss as they chase bait from Monomoy to Coast Guard beach in Orleans.
Martha's Vineyard  Tina, at Coop's Bait & Tackle on the Vineyard, says the fishing is still slow around the Island with the boaters doing better than the surfcasters. The best area is generally up-island, down island being harder to fish lately. Few bonito are being caught and virtually all are from boats trolling. The tuna fishers are getting a chance to fish much closer to the island, off Menemsha, but again it is work lately to connect.
Cape Cod Canal Bruce at Canal Bait and Tackle tells me that the fish are breaking in the canal now at dawn and dusk. Good fish are being taken on chunks with a few blues in the five-pound size mixed in. Off the east end, the tube and worm is still taking nice bass to 40 pounds. Best fluking is along Mashnee.
