Weekly Fishing Report for April 30, 1999

The Schoolies are in!

Finally, the schoolies ar really into the Cape; Martha's Vineyard, Falmouth, the Canal and the south coast to Bass River having the highest concentrations but big catches are happening with freater frequency all the way to P'town. These fish are mixing wtih the overwintering stripers in the warmest water they can find. This means that the best fishing is often up river from the mouth, and in the tops or backs of bays and coves.

Small lures are the rule right now; with 1/4 to 1/2 ounce jigs, light spoons and small floater/diver plugs working the best. There are folks out there chunk baiting, especially at night but no one is catching keepers this way just yet. Big fish right now are about 25" and there are lots of 16" to 24" fish around.

Of course, the herring are running really well most places and that bodes well for an influx of bigger stripers soon. Take particular note of the fishing regs for herring at your local runs if you are taking for bait or to freeze for later. Apparently town regs supercede state regs and they are often not the same at all, different quantities and days of the week for one. Best to check at the town hall first and then the state level next.

On the scene of other fishing, the word is that stellwagon is producing very nice catches of cod and the tautog fishing has been good in Buzzards Bay and the Canal. Greeen crabs are the bait of chaice, of course.

No reliable word yet of bluefish but we expect them any day around the Vineyard and along the coast near poponesset and Cotuit.

Down Cape, the big runs of schoolies have just reached Pleasant Bay in Chatham. There are nice fish around, enough to make it worthwhile to go out but no "endless catching" just yet. In a week the fishing will really explode. You'll read it here first when it does!
